London Warehouse Fire Destroys Artworks By SARAH LYALL

LONDON — A fire that began on Monday and ripped through a warehouse in east London has destroyed millions of dollars worth of work by leading contemporary British artists, dozens of them from the vast collection of Charles Saatchi, the warehouse's owner and Mr. Saatchi said on Wednesday.

Among the works that have been lost are pieces by Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread and Jake and Dinos Chapman, all part of the influential and showy Young British Artist movement championed and sustained by Mr. Saatchi for the last 15 or so years. via...">NYT

Gaza Rafa Zoo

ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy

The Israelis destroyed the Rafa Zoo. Demolished cages. Dead animals. Dead birds, a headless ostrich, other birds flying free.

It is remeniscent of Kabul, when the Zoo was hit...the lion was wounded.

Saint Francis of Assisi was right.....

"Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."

Give me the Manet!

artzen - art culture info expo

Are you a Picasso or a Matisse?

The works of the two masters appear side by side at Tate Modern. But are you a bullish Picasso type, or a serene Matisse person? Stuart Jeffries helps you decide.

My result...Mostly Bs: You're a serene person, not lacking in sensuality, but fundamentally untroubled. Matisse is for you, but you'd probably like Monet too. Not Manet, though.....pity Manet is one of my favorite painters!

Picasso Still Going Strong as First Auction Week Ends By CAROL VOGEL

Picasso certainly is the flavor of the week," said Nancy Whyte, a private dealer, as the gavel fell on the final lot of Sotheby's sale of Impressionist and modern art on Thursday night.

Still reeling from the sale of a 1905 Picasso for a record-breaking $104.1 million on Wednesday night, Sotheby's was testing slightly more modest market levels with an auction of Impressionist and modern art from various owners. The sale totaled $96 million, just shy of its high estimate, $99 million. Of the 52 works, only 10 went unsold. Picassos from various periods were stars, and many brought particularly strong prices.

"It's a brand name," Ms. Whyte said. Tobias Meyer, director of Sotheby's contemporary-art department and the evening's auctioneer, said, "Consciously or subconsciously, something is going on with the Picasso market." He added that Wednesday's record price "definitely had an effect" on Thursday's sale. via...NYT

Going out of our way to find the right people.
When we announced the opening of our engineering office in Zurich, a lot of Europeans seemed pleased about the possibility of working for Google without a commute to California. Zurich draws Italians, French, Swiss, Germans, and other Europeans, and is easier to reach from most parts of the continent than the Amphitheatre Parkway exit off highway 101.

We recognize that talented engineers live in every time zone, not just Silicon Valley. That's fine with us, because when it comes to solving technical problems Google benefits from global perspectives, as well as a diversity of languages and working hours. And we want to accommodate people who want to work with us, but who may not feel like uprooting their their lives, even for Charlie's cooking.

So, if you're looking for a place to plug into Google, we're trying to make it easy for you. We're looking for talented software engineers, top programmers and visionary computer scientists to tackle everything from distributed systems and information retrieval to algorithms, UI, and scalability challenges. And of course to unplug the lava lamps occasionally so they don't overheat.

Whether you're in the market for a challenging engineering position in Mountain View, in Bangalore, or in our new Tokyo office, or somewhere really out of this world, we hope you'll look us up.

Posted @ 3:30 PM / Permanent Link

Is this thing on?
Ever since I came to Google, they've been talking about putting up an official Google blog. And now, less than 15 months later, voilà.

Oh well, it's not like we own a recently relaunched service where you can create a blog in two minutes or something. Okay, we do. (Sorry for the plug.) But I guess other Googlers have been a little busy what with all the searching. And the advertising. And filling out purchase orders for all those hard drives.

Anyway, I'm excited the blog's up. We're going to post stuff here - regular bloggy things: What Larry had for breakfast. What Sergey thinks of that Hellboy movie. Which Dawson's Creek character reminds us most of Eric.

And perhaps, news about Google, and our thoughts on whatever random events cross our horizon.

Oh, and we have email feedback too. So we hope to hear from you, as well.

Noble Rot: A Bordeaux Wine Revolution
By William Echikson

Tipple trouble - The Economist

"At times the book's characters are a little too obviously typecast as "goodies" or "baddies". The goodies are working-class Frenchmen who live on the right bank and whose cause is promoted by democratic Americans, who can see through the mystique of old Europe. (The book has a distinctly post-September 11th feel.) The baddies are the snobs of the left bank, in alliance with lazy and corrupt British wine critics." Read more

Publishers Weekly
In vino veritas. Yet as Echikson (Burgundy Stars) shows in this entertaining journey through Bordeaux's wine-making landscape, the truth of wine is also highly subjective and subject to change. Bordeaux has long epitomized fine wine. In 1662, Echikson relates, the English diarist Samuel Pepys... Read more

Stop Discrimination: World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, 8 May 2004

Intolerance and the lack of respect for diversity represent major obstacles to achieving the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's core aim of protecting human dignity, and have an adverse impact on key aspects of its work.

On 8 May, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and National Societies worldwide commemorate the birth in 1828 of one of the Movement's founders, Henry Dunant, who inspired the creation of the ICRC in 1863.

Based on the belief that all those injured on the battlefield had a right to receive care no matter which side they were fighting for, the principle of non-discrimination was at the very heart of the founders' earliest convictions and remains so for the Movement today.

You too can make a difference for war victims.

In We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People, nationally known business and technology columnist Dan Gillmor tells the story of this emerging phenomenon, and sheds light on this deep shift in how we make and consume the news. [Full Description]
